[00:00:00] Etienne: We were able to get to this other door where you had to throw your leg over one railing and then grab onto the next railing that was a 45 degree angle to the next railing and then throw your leg over that one and then you were on the stairwell that you needed to get down to his tour bus. Or instead you had to walk around the entire fucking student union. There was five of us standing there, one of 'em was Trent Reznor, standing there looking at this situation and we're all like, I guess we'll try, like, let's try to get over this.

[00:00:26] Etienne: So Trent goes first and he has no problem. He made it look super easy. But then I was like waiting for somebody else to go next. And, I was the only girl standing there, by the way. And nobody's going. And I'm like, all right, I'll try. I mean, I wasn't too scared 'cause I got super ass long legs.

[00:00:39] Etienne: So, I'll probably be fine. I got over the first one, no problem. But it turns out the second railing was fucking taller. So I got my leg over, but I was on the tips of my toes, teetering, and it's just a metal railing, so it's not a big rail. And Trent is standing right there watching me and I don't even remember saying, help me. I don't think I said, help me. 

[00:00:59] Etienne: Welcome listeners. This is The Women Are Plotting. I'm Etienne Rose Olivier and I'm here with my friends and co-hosts, Heidi Willis and Jane Gari.

[00:01:14] Etienne: On today's episode, we're gonna be talking about celebrity close encounters. And I have one fun fact and one dark fact about two different celebrities. 

[00:01:26] Etienne: And the fun fact is about Dwayne Johnson, he's got a clock app that you can download and he has inspirational quotes and you have to get up. I dunno if you have to get up when he gets up. He gets up at 4 45 every day.

[00:01:38] Etienne: The part that I actually did tell Heidi this earlier, 'cause I thought it was funny as hell there's no snooze, there's no snooze option on his clock. So you've gotta freaking get up when it goes off. Oh

[00:01:51] Jane: That's a lot of pressure.

[00:01:52] Etienne: Yeah, right. Especially get up at 4 45, no snooze, jump out of bed, go tackle the day. 

[00:02:00] Etienne: And then my dark fact is Debbie Harry got in a car with Ted Bundy once.

[00:02:05] Jane: Whoa.

[00:02:06] Etienne: Yeah, back in the Seventies and she lived to tell the tale. She needed a ride. She was in New York City, she was working at a nightclub, and she said she needed to get from Houston Street to the Lower East Side on Seventh Avenue, and she couldn't find a freaking cab.

[00:02:20] Etienne: She was wearing platform shoes. She knew she wasn't gonna be walking there. And Ted Bundy in a Volkswagen Bug kept circling the block and kept saying, I'll give you a ride. And, she looked in the car and saw, okay, he's cute. All right. And she like, gets in. Shuts the door. And she noticed, oh, he's got really bad b.o. And then she noticed that the car itself had been completely gutted.

[00:02:45] Etienne: There was nothing in that car and there wasn't a crank to roll down the window, but I guess there was a space for her to reach through the window because she decided I'm getting really bad vibes in here. I'm getting the fuck out. And she reached outside through the window and unlatched the door and he saw what she was doing and turned a corner and she fucking flew out of the car onto the street.

[00:03:02] Jane: Oh my God. And what, so this happened in New York

[00:03:05] Etienne: New York City in the Seventies. Yeah.

[00:03:07] Jane: In the Seventies. Well, thank God that he didn't succeed because

[00:03:10] Etienne: Yeah, this was before she was famous. Yeah.

[00:03:12] Jane: Oh my Lord

[00:03:14] Etienne: Crazy.

[00:03:15] Jane: That would've been so tragic. I mean, it would've been so sad to not have, I was just listening to Dreaming Is Free is my favorite Blondie song. And I just like,

[00:03:24] Heidi: Mine too. Mine too.

[00:03:25] Jane: I could crank that and if my life, there were moments where that song was the soundtrack to my life and that would've been so sad. So I'm so glad she had the wherewithal to get outta that car. My God.

[00:03:36] Etienne: I think, Jane, you're gonna share your fun fact next, so hopefully it's not quite as dark.

[00:03:40] Jane: It is not as dark. It's more of a fun fact about a celebrity's preference as a cautionary thing if you ever meet this person. I learned this fun fact when Etienne introduced me to the Smartless podcast.

[00:03:55] Jane: We were on our way to a writer's conference, and Etienne was like, you have to listen to this podcast because Paul McCartney is the guest. And I love Paul McCartney. I'm obsessed with The Beatles, and I love Paul McCartney, not just as an artist, but he is like a standup person. By all accounts.

[00:04:11] Jane: And when I was listening to that podcast, he said that when he loves talking to people and if he meets somebody out in the wild, that is a fan, but they just talk to him and ask him questions and just tell stories about their own lives and how much they love his music or their influences. He could have a conversation with someone for a long time.

[00:04:32] Jane: The second you pull out a camera and say, could you take a picture with me? He said it puts him in the mode of feeling like a performing monkey. And he no longer just feels like a dude talking about music with people. But then he feels like, now I'm Paul McCartney and now I have to perform for this person.

[00:04:47] Jane: And so, my sister, I love her very much if she's listening. But she's a professional photographer and I had to tell her she wants to record all the moments. And I said, if we are ever together. I get to meet Paul McCartney. You're going to every fiber of your being is gonna wanna take a picture of this moment.

[00:05:02] Jane: Do not. ' Cause you're gonna ruin my conversation with Paul McCartney because I still hold out hope that I may meet him one day and I don't want him to feel like a performing monkey. I wanna thank him for his amazing music and that has enriched my life and helped me through hard times, and that he is a gift in this world, and the last thing I want is for him to feel like a performing monkey.

[00:05:23] Jane: Like if I get to meet him, I will remember that moment on my deathbed. I don't need a picture of it.

[00:05:28] Heidi: Yeah, exactly. That's how I felt about meeting Norman Lear. I didn't want it ruined by a selfie, you know? Or, any kind of picture taking. So, same 

[00:05:38] Jane: cheapens it and he's like, your hero. But wait, wait. Before we get, 'cause I, I 

[00:05:42] Heidi: Yes. 

[00:05:42] Jane: that's one of the stories you wanna tell, but what's your fun fact?

[00:05:44] Heidi: What is mine? Oh, mine's pretty dark as well.

[00:05:49] Jane: The darkness

[00:05:51] Heidi: lemme get to it here. 

[00:05:52] Heidi: So it's Anne Perry, the author. She wrote over a hundred different books, all historical detective fiction. Anyway, she was once a murderess. Her and best friend killed her best friend's mother. Yeah. Because she was so young, she only spent five years in jail, but her and her best friend that their story was the basis for Heavenly Creatures.

[00:06:16] Heidi: That I was just gonna ask you about that. I love that movie. And when I heard that it was based on a true story, I went, what?

[00:06:23] Heidi: Yeah.

[00:06:25] Jane: Oh, that's dark. I.

[00:06:26] Heidi: Isn't that? And yeah. For this real life murderess to go on to write historical detective novels, like that's just wild. And over a hundred. So when the movie came out, she was kind of outed, 'cause she had changed her name. So yeah, when the movie came out she was outed and she was already like, you know, a famous author. Isnt that crazy?

[00:06:48] Jane: I wonder if it made her sell less or more books. I don't know. People would be like, whoa.

[00:06:52] Heidi: Yeah. I don't know. Anyway. Yeah, I thought this fun fact is very much, it's got an author, it's got a movie there and some murder, so yeah.

[00:07:02] Jane: These are all things you, you love.

[00:07:05] Heidi: found.

[00:07:05] Jane: Well, you don't love murder. You like reading

[00:07:08] Heidi: No, yeah.

[00:07:08] Jane: Let's just clarify that for the audience. Heidi is not planning anything or you know, she has not done anything, but she's definitely had some, I know you've had some fucked up Google searches over the years doing research on things like that. So this fun fact for me does not surprise me.

[00:07:24] Heidi: Yeah, yeah. Well, finding out that her life story was the basis for Heavenly Creatures, which I really, really enjoyed that movie. It launched Kate Winslet. She was a young, young actress in one of her first roles, so yeah. So

[00:07:40] Jane: so disturbing.

[00:07:41] Heidi: who's

[00:07:42] Etienne: I don't remember the particulars. I do remember Kate Winslet and it was definitely the Nineties. But I don't remember the particulars. They collude to kill somebody. 

[00:07:51] Jane: Yeah. Parents.

[00:07:53] Etienne: Both their parents or all of their parents?

[00:07:55] Jane: No, just the one girl's mom. But there's a sapphic relationship between the two of them. They're like in love kind of, you know? But, it's been a long time since I've seen this film

[00:08:03] Etienne: Yeah, I think I only saw it the one time, way back when.

[00:08:06] Jane: It was good though. But yeah, I'd be scared to meet somebody and know that they actually, like, could you imagine, you go there to the book signing, you like her as an author and then you know this fact and just be like, don't piss her off. So Etienne, are any of your stories about authors or are they all about musicians?

[00:08:23] Etienne: Oh no, they're not about authors. Yeah, they're, well, one is an actor. And the other two, I mean, I have a few close encounters, but real close encounters. Yeah. One is an actor and two are musicians, so I didn't, yeah, I don't have any from authors, no. Oh, I, I mean, I did at one point have a short lived relationship with a TV writer, but it wasn't even, like, it was not even, I can't remember what show he wrote on, that's how it's not famous. It aired, but yeah.

[00:08:51] Etienne: No, my famous. Well, I have little ones, like one of my favorites I have to talk about is Tim Roth. Gee, it looks like you don't even know about that one.

[00:09:01] Jane: Don't know about this, and I love Tim Roth. My husband and I were just talking about how much we love him. He's in so many weird movies that I love, one of which is Rosencrantz and Gildenstern Are Dead. So wait to hear this.

[00:09:15] Etienne: So there was a restaurant, Pane e Vino, that used to exist in, oh gosh, I can't remember what area of LA it was in, but it wasn't that far from where I worked at Paramount Pictures. And my boss for the four years that I worked for him at Paramount, he took me there every year from my birthday or right around my birthday.

[00:09:31] Etienne: I don't even know if I actually worked on my birthday. I think I took that day off, but then he would take me to lunch there before or after. And we'd sit outside so that we could smoke, 'cause this was like before all the banning smoking everywhere. But they had an outdoor area because, you know, LA was, I dunno if it still is, but was a huge smoking town.

[00:09:46] Etienne: All the actors and everybody. It's easier to stay skinny when you're full of nicotine. And I was a smoker too, so I wanted to sit out there, but I wouldn't usually smoke. Like I wouldn't smoke during the day or around my boss. Like I wouldn't let him see me do it. But I'd had some alcohol during lunch, and I noticed Tim Roth, sitting. And I think he was sitting and eating by himself out there. I don't remember seeing anybody with him. And he started smoking and I was like, it was the end of my meal. And I was already a little tipsy, obviously. And, I was like, I told my boss I'm gonna ask him for a cigarette 'cause I didn't have any on me. I think he was sitting next to us. I don't even think I had to stand up and get over. I just kinda leaned over and was like, hey, can I bum a cigarette off you? And he was like, yeah. And he looks, and it's like, I think it was his last cigarette too. And he's like, I, I'm like, oh, no, no, I can't.

[00:10:35] Etienne: He's like, no, it's okay. Like I'm taking his last cigarette. And I took it from him. And then I'm like, well, can you light it for me? Like, I don't, I think I did have a lighter on me, but I was just fucking lying. And, um, yeah. So I, as he's lighting it, my stepdad taught me this. How to have an intimate moment with a man, especially related to cigarettes, is when they go to light your cigarette, you touch their hand, like on the back of their hand as they're lighting your cigarette, you're just like holding it there, like showing them how long you need it for and then as soon as you move your hand away, they can take their hand back, but you're actually are touching them.

[00:11:09] Etienne: So I did, I touched his hand and he held the flame there for me to light my cigarette and then I let go and I was like, thank you so much. Yeah, he looked really good. I mean, this was definitely, this was, so I left LA in 2004, so it was before that. It was one of the, it was either between the year 2000 and 2004 that this happened. 'Cause those were the years I worked at Paramount for this boss. And yeah, that's

[00:11:32] Jane: So it's after Reservoir

[00:11:33] Etienne: after Reservoir Dogs, after Pulp Fiction. Yeah. But I think it was before Lie To Me, I don't think, Lie To Me, the TV show had come out yet, so yeah. So he looked really good. And you know, the English accent.

[00:11:44] Jane: then the accent, of course,

[00:11:46] Etienne: no way I'm not gonna love that. Oh my God. No, he is so, I mean, pretty much whenever you see a celebrity, I think in person, especially men, like, you're just shocked how good looking they are in person. I saw Tim Allen once at a bar. It wasn't even a crowded bar. We were there way too early. And, he walked up and went straight to the bar. Obviously he knew the people who were, who like owned the place. And this was after Home Improvement was on, so he was on the older side and he looked amazing. I was like, holy shit. Like even Tim Allen looks a great person. Like is it just every celebrity looks amazing in person?

[00:12:21] Etienne: Like yeah. But, I don't dunno if we wanna move on to somebody else before I give my big story. That's my favorite, my favorite celebrity

[00:12:29] Jane: Oh, I wonder if I can guess which story you're gonna

[00:12:32] Etienne: Oh yeah. You totally can guess that one.

[00:12:35] Jane: Yes, I can't wait.

[00:12:37] Etienne: Well, you just want me to go? You just want me to go for it. Okay. So I have had a big crush on Trent Reznor forever. Like I got to see him at Lollapalooza. And I had my concert promoter boyfriend when Downward Spiral tour came around. And I heard when the dates were announced, and I think there was an LA date.

[00:12:57] Etienne: I mean, there had to be, you can't not go to Los Angeles, but he wasn't doing the show. It was a whole nother company. It wasn't his company doing it. So I knew that meant I wouldn't be able to get special treatment or backstage passes or some kind of special thing happening. And that's what I was really, really trying to do.

[00:13:12] Etienne: So I kind of goaded him in a, I manipulated him in in a way and I said, I bet you can't get him to do a show in San Diego. Well, it turned out there was like a big chunk of time between Los Angeles and I think his next stop was Arizona. And there actually could have been a slot for San Diego and there just wasn't one.

[00:13:30] Etienne: Yeah, he ended up getting a show. He ended up getting to do Nine Inch Nails in San Diego and it was actually done up at like, gosh, I think it was UC San Diego. It turns out my ex-husband was in the audience and I did not know him at the time 'cause he was also a huge Nine Inch Nails fan. But that's a side note.

[00:13:44] Etienne: But yeah, so after the concert, my boyfriend came up to me and said, oh, so uh, we're gonna be going with Trent to a strip club. He is like, you okay with that? I'm like, yeah, well, I wouldn't know. I don't, I said, are they gonna be fully nude? Like, I mean, it doesn't matter. I'm going, but, you know.

[00:14:02] Etienne: But it turned out his tour bus, like the way this student union, 'cause this was literally at a student union where the concert was being held, the stairs that led down to his bus that he used to come up before the show we're locked and no longer able to like get to the stairs, like the door that went straight to the stairs.

[00:14:21] Etienne: Instead, we were able to get to this other door where you had to throw your leg over one railing and then grab onto the next railing that was a 45 degree angle to the next railing and then throw your leg over that one and then you were on the stairwell that you needed to get down to his tour bus. Or instead you had to walk around the entire fucking student union, which was huge. And so we all decided, there was like five of us standing there, one of 'em was Trent Reznor, standing there looking at this situation and we're all like, I guess we'll try, like, let's try to get over this and do it.

[00:14:53] Etienne: So Trent goes first and he has no problem. He made it look super easy. But then I was like waiting for somebody else to go next. And nobody, I was the only girl standing there, by the way. All the rest were men. I. And nobody's going. And I'm like, all right, I'll try. I mean, I wasn't too scared 'cause I got super ass long legs.

[00:15:09] Etienne: I have a little tiny torso, but I have really long legs. So I was like, I'll probably be fine. I got over the first one, no problem. But it turns out the second railing was fucking taller. So I got my leg over, but I was like literally on the tips of my toes, like teetering, like grabbing, and it's just a metal railing, so it's not like a big giant rail. It's like literally one of those skinny metal railings. And you're like, uh, and I, and Trent is standing right there watching me and I'm like, uh, and I don't even remember saying like, help me. I don't think I said, help me. He just came over to me, he wrapped his arms around my torso and just lifted me up and put me down.

[00:15:48] Etienne: And as he was doing that, my head went right into his neck, into his hair. And I was just, I couldn't believe that I had a close encounter like that where he literally lifted me up, like I weighed nothing and put me down. And I was like, oh my God, thank you. I was scared for a minute and actually I'm getting like, you know, flustered thinking about it 'cause it was fucking scary, but also exciting at the same time because he's like saving me and he is like, ah, yeah, it's hard to be a woman sometimes I can get it.

[00:16:13] Etienne: I'm like, okay. And then he just walks off. He doesn't wait for anybody else. He just like leaves. He goes down the stairs and down to his tour bus, and I'm like, okay. And yeah. And then my boyfriend, who was super jealous of anybody looking at me. And he knew how he felt about Trent Reznor. He goes next, he's like, can't get his shit fast enough over to where I am now. And he whispers into my ear. He is like, you got wet, didn't you? And I'm like, well, no, actually I was scared, but i'm wet now. But we did.

[00:16:44] Jane: Oh my God. You could have kissed his neck.

[00:16:46] Etienne: I sniffed. I for sure sniffed. Not that I remember what it smelled like, but I for sure it wasn't bad. I would remember if it was bad, but I for sure sniffed and had the hair like just all like, just imagine your face in the hair.

[00:16:58] Etienne: You're in the hair. He should have smelled bad. 'Cause you know, he'd been sweating on stage, but I didn't smell anything bad. But when we were at the strip club. We were sitting in this U-shaped booth, like in the middle a woman can come and dance like right there.

[00:17:11] Etienne: And, turns out like the way that we sat with his band members and me and my boyfriend, turns out Trent was directly across from me. Like, I was like just one in from the u like my boyfriend was on the outside and I was one in and he was like one in, on his side too. And I kept seeing him looking behind me.

[00:17:31] Etienne: Or that's what I thought he was doing. And I'm like, who, there must be somebody really attractive behind me. I was just like, who's? And I finally was like, I'm gonna have to turn around and see who this is. And I fucking turned around and there is nobody behind me. I realized he's fucking checking me out.

[00:17:47] Etienne: Oh no. And of course in my head I'm going, well, this is not gonna happen. Even if he wanted something to happen that it wasn't worth throwing away what I had with my boyfriend and like all of the perks of having a concert promoter boyfriend to have like what? Like probably an encounter in a bathroom or something with this guy.

[00:18:04] Etienne: Like, no, but I was just super like. You know, pat myself on the back and I was just like, dude, Trent Reznor's checking me out. I like it. But yeah, that was pretty much the whole, and I did actually go to a party when he was recording Downward Spiral when he was living at the Tate house. I got to go to a party there.

[00:18:24] Etienne: He threw a party. You weren't allowed in the house, but he had the pool house open. So you could either stand around and hang out at the pool or be in the pool house. And I did like. I am a couple times there, but that was before the whole concert thing, so he didn't know me. But yeah.

[00:18:39] Etienne: Um, yeah, there were a few like times like that where I got to be near him, but after the concert at San Diego, that was the closest in your face moment. Yeah. And I was, I will have that forever. So happy to.

[00:18:54] Jane: That's

[00:18:54] Heidi: I love that. That's like a dream come true. Yeah.

[00:18:58] Etienne: I know, seriously, I couldn't have had like a better, I mean, I didn't purposefully put myself in danger. I swear. It's like, I felt like I could have thrown myself over that railing probably, but it just felt like, uh, I don't know. I, I could have hurt myself. I was wearing these like leather pants I really liked and I was just imagining hurting them.

[00:19:21] Etienne: Or myself, I mean, I as in my like 22 or something. I wasn't very old, but yeah. I'm just so glad he saved me. 

[00:19:29] Etienne: I do also have a story about Adam Duritz from Counting Crows. I got to go to his house one night and watch a movie. Can't even remember what the movie was, honestly. But I was dating a guy who was friends with him, and I met that guy at The Viper room.

[00:19:42] Etienne: And this was during the time when Adam Duritz was having writer's block and he could not write another album. I mean, he was so famous and he just shut down creatively. And so he decided I'm just gonna be a bartender at The Viper Room for free. So his friend was like, Hey, you wanna go to Adam's house?

[00:19:56] Etienne: And I'm like, uh, sure. So, he ordered pizza. There were these two giant recliner chairs. Adam was in a chair with some girl and I was over with this guy that I was seeing for a minute. And yeah. During that night I found out that Adam Durtiz's dreads weren't real.

[00:20:11] Etienne: His mom was a hairdresser and she was the one who used to have to do them every once in a while to keep 'em fresh and not Yeah. I didn't know that. I don't know if that's common knowledge or not, but I don't think it was at the time. And yeah, so I walked away with that little tidbit, but he was super nice. Yeah. And watched a movie left, like, I don't know. I mean, celebrities are just regular people and I always feel really uncomfortable around them in general just because it's like I'm, I feel self-conscious. It's not that I feel self-conscious about them, I feel self-conscious about myself, like how I'm behaving around them.

[00:20:45] Etienne: 'Cause I wanna act normal. And it's hard to act normal around somebody you've seen so many times, or you admire their work. Or you might have a crush on 'em. You know, it's just so difficult to be a normal person around them. And I feel bad, like, I feel bad that there's, that's probably the majority of their life, that they don't have normal human experiences anymore.

[00:21:06] Etienne: Unless they go to some country where nobody knows who the fuck they are or something, you know? Yeah.

[00:21:10] Jane: That's why I tried so hard to be like, all right, if I ever get met Paul McCartney, I would keep my cool and like not, but I'd probably cry. I have actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm like, I have had close encounters, but like some of them were with people that, I'll tell you the esoteric story, but some of them have been with people, celebrities that I didn't really care about, so I guess I didn't count it. 

[00:21:32] Jane: So when I was teaching high school in New York, I taught a course on TV analysis and production, and I had a production studio as part of my classroom, and it was really cool. And there were a couple of shows produced in New York that I was like, oh, I could get, I had a neighbor who lived in my apartment building who worked for Nickelodeon.

[00:21:49] Jane: And so I was like, all right, we could go to the set of Blues Clues, and check that out. And so we met Steve from Blues Clues and he was like, before he put a stripey shirt on, he has a lot of tattoos. I didn't think that the guy, that's why his shirt would come all the way down to his wrist so he could cover his tattoos.

[00:22:08] Jane: So I met Steve from Blues Clues, but I was like, whatever, I'm not, you know, not a child. So I'm not super excited. My students were very excited even though they were in high school because they knew him from when they were younger. And then we went to a taping of Total Requests Live with Carson Dailey. And Carson Dailey is so tall, I did not realize how tall he was.

[00:22:27] Jane: But, my now husband, who was just my boyfriend at the time, came with me on both of those field trips as a chaperone. He was like my built-in chaperone. I was like, you wanna go on a field trip with me and all these high school kids? I'm like, I gotta take 'em to Manhattan. It's like, I need adults to help me supervise, make sure nobody does anything stupid. And so he did, and it was great, you know, because his voice was just very gruff. He was just like, Hey, you know, and then the kids, I don't know, they were great when he was around, but the kids I took to these TV things, it was a very small group of students. It was just 20 kids and they were super excited to be going and we get to Total Request Live and they were like, oh, you're the teacher with the students. We were assuming you would just sit in the green room, but at the time, I looked young and they were like, oh, but you're young enough for our demographic. You could totally sit in the recording. And I'm like, I do not wanna bum these kids out by sitting with

[00:23:15] Heidi: Yeah.

[00:23:16] Jane: On this show. So Brendon and I sat in the green room while they were doing the recording and that was funny.

[00:23:22] Jane: And then, like all of my close encounters with celebrities are all music related. So my esoteric experience was with Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction. And there's been a couple of them and they just involve like being on the same brand of ecstasy on the same night. I know this because Perry Farrell talked about it.

[00:23:46] Heidi: I don't think I know this 

[00:23:47] Jane: it from the stage. What? Oh, well you're about to

[00:23:50] Heidi: Yeah.

[00:23:51] Jane: Is something like that I feel in my, okay. First of all, Jane's Addiction is one of my top three favorite bands. I think it's like the Beatles, Radiohead, Jane's Addiction and then it gets really tight after that because I love a lot of music, but definitely Jane's Addiction I just love, love, love them. So this meant a lot to me that this happened. So before they broke up, and then he was doing Porno For Pyro stuff.

[00:24:13] Jane: So I saw them at the Hammerstein ballroom. I am just really great ecstasy, alright? And it was these ones called, they, they had little stamps on them that was the Mitsubishi symbol. Right. And they were good. If you know, you know. So that's what I was on, and I was feeling like really constricted in my throat because I was wearing like this dog collar style necklace, and it was the last time I ever wore that necklace. I was freaking out so much, that in the middle of Ted, Just Admit It, I was like, I gotta get the fuck outta here and take this necklace off. So I went to the bathroom, splashed some water in my face, took this necklace off, left it on a toilet, like the back of a toilet in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and just left it there.

[00:24:57] Jane: I was like, I don't need this necklace anymore. And I just, I regretted it the next day, 'cause I did like that necklace. It had like these really cool metal things on it. But I was like, fuck this. I don't wanna miss any more of the concert. I'd like run back in to the concert and go back to where my friends are, right up near the front, like right up near the front.

[00:25:12] Jane: And he starts playing Jane Says, and he's singing it like right to me and I'm right there. And then before he actually gets into the groove of the song, sometimes he talks about like weird shit, you know? And so he was just saying, he's like, oh, you know, Mitsubishi, it's just, I'm feeling it. I'm on your wavelength. And he is looking right at me. And he was just like, I hope you're feeling better now. And I was like, what the fuck? He is talking to me. He's talking to me. You are like, that's a weird thing to say, right? I hope you're feeling better now. Right. And then he is just, and then he is just like, you know, going

[00:25:43] Heidi: It's like you had telepathy going on with him for a 

[00:25:46] Jane: Yes. Okay. So that's weird encounter number one, right? And then he's just like, you know, giving me like a thumbs up, like, you're okay now, right? So then I see them again when it's Porno For Pyros at the Enit Festival, in New Jersey. Actually, so there's one more before that. I should go in chronological order, right?

[00:26:04] Jane: Still Jane's Addiction. I'm in Philadelphia, with the same guy that I saw jane's Addiction with at the Hammerstein Ballroom, right? So he already knows, like I have this weird thing, right? So we're in Philadelphia. We're further away from the stage. 'Cause it's an arena, it's not like a ballroom situation where you can get like right up against the stage. Like, we have seats, you know, but nobody's sitting down, but you're in your designated spot, which kind of sucked. So I felt like I wasn't gonna have that kind of connection. Oh, but no. All right. So again, it was actually before Ted, Just Admit It and there's like this long baseline kind of riffing and before Perry starts singing, he decides it's gonna go on one of his weird monologues.

[00:26:43] Jane: Right. And it's really specific. It's about how sometimes you have experiences that you can't explain and you and the spirits talk to you and it can be really frightening. Okay. I had just had like a really weird experience in the house that I was living in. I was renting a room in my boyfriend at the time's house, and several people had died in that house and I was having really weird experiences in that house.

[00:27:06] Jane: And, it was freaking me out because he casually says, yeah, my uncle died in that room, so maybe that's who you're hearing. And I was like, what? And I also was seeing this woman, who I found out later by seeing her in a photograph was my boyfriend's grandmother who had passed away in the house also.

[00:27:23] Jane: So I was just having like, really. It's like, you know, I had some moments that were very intense for me and I was struggling with like, why do I have to always live in these haunted places? 'Cause that had happened to me earlier in life and I thought that that part of my life was over. And now here I am living in another fucking haunted house and I can't afford to live elsewhere right now.

[00:27:45] Jane: And I just have to deal with living in this haunted house and seeing these things. I was struggling with that all week. And then I go see Jane's Addiction and Perry Farrell just goes off on a monologue for like five minutes, like just, you know, and it's gonna be okay. And it happens to me too. And you know, it's kind of a gift and you could just embrace it and we're all just like a part of something bigger and it's all gonna be okay and it goes and sings the song and I'm like, what the fuck? My boyfriend at the time, Abba like looks right. He goes, he is fucking talking to you.

[00:28:13] Jane: And I was like crying. I was like, he's talking to me. So then time number three, Enid Festival, New Jersey. It's Porno For Pyros. So I'm like, all right, it's Porno For Pyros. Like it's probably not gonna play any Jane songs. And I was like, it's okay. They're not gonna play Jane songs. ' Cause it's just, it's you know, Steven, that was the drummer from Jane's Addiction, I talked to him actually, we were both in the line for vegan food. And Steven was wearing a what is his last name? Etienne. You remember?

[00:28:40] Etienne: Perkins.

[00:28:40] Jane: Thank you Perkins. I was like, it's gonna come to me. All right. So Steven Perkins is wearing a toga. I don't know why. 'Cause he's Steven Perkins and he can get away with wearing a toga. And we're both in line for vegan food and I'm just like, why does Steven Perkins have to wait in line for food also?

[00:28:55] Jane: But he is in front of me in line. And I was just like, Hey man, I just wanted to say like, thank you. Like I didn't, I didn't freak out. And he was just like, oh yeah, right on, man. He was just like, he's like, I hope this food is really good. And I was just like, yeah. I'm like, why don't you don't they have something for you back there?

[00:29:08] Jane: Like, you're with the fucking band. He's like, you would think he's like, but there's a lot of meat back there and I'm not having it. So I'm like, here with you guys. And while I'm here, I'm just gonna like play in that drum circle over there. And. Get out. So we did, and it was awesome.

[00:29:20] Jane: So I'm eating vegan food for a hot second with Steven Perkins, and then he puts his plate down and I actually threw it away for him, and then he played drums. So that was like, cool. And then later Porno For Pyros goes on. And once again, Mitsubishis, right. But instead of feeling super good, which I usually would on ecstasy, I was actually feeling kind of panicked because of the crowd. 'Cause I was trying to work my way closer to and closer to the stage. But it was a big festival, so it was a lot more people than being like at the Hammerstein Ballroom where you can kind of go over to the side. I felt like Uhoh, this is a lot of people. And then Perry Farrell, I was feeling like he was thinking, you know how you just you have a slightly psychedelic experience, right? So I was afraid for a hot second. This sounds stupid, me saying it out loud now, but I, this is what I thought. I thought that Perry thought he was Jesus for just like a couple minutes and it made me really. Feel not good, you know? And I just thought, I love this person's music and I don't want him to have a messianic complex.

[00:30:18] Jane: And I really hope that that's not what's happening here, but it feels like that's what's happening here. It was just like his posturing and just the vibe and everything. And then again, he, like, after they play the song, he goes over to the mic and again, he just starts doing like, there's no music that's coming on.

[00:30:32] Jane: So I don't know what song's about to happen. And he just starts talking about how, you know, it's okay. Like the ego sometimes it just can take over a little bit, but then we can kind of like keep it in check and we're all good. And then he, I feel like he's looking right at me and he is just like, it's Mitsubishi time again and it's gonna be awesome.

[00:30:50] Jane: And he says, I know exactly what you need. And they fucking play Summertime Roles, which is my favorite Jane's addiction song. And it's not a Jane's Addiction concert, right? But since Steven's there, I guess they were like, all right, we'll do this. And I lost my shit. I like went running right to the stage and I was like, I love you.

[00:31:05] Jane: And I'm like right in front. And after he was done, he looked right at me and he said, again, just like he did the first time in Hammerstein Ballroom. Do you feel better now? And I was just like, you've got to be shitting me. And uh, yeah. Anyway, it was nuts. And Abba was at that concert too, my ex-boyfriend and he was like, Perry

[00:31:25] Heidi: Yeah. You guys have a connection of 

[00:31:28] Jane: I think so. And like years later, Abba met Perry Ferrell. 'Cause Perry was like DJing at like a little club somewhere in Manhattan. I wasn't there.

[00:31:36] Heidi: What?

[00:31:37] Jane: But Abba went up to him and said, Hey man, this is gonna sound really weird. He's like, I just need to say hi to you on behalf of my friend Jane, I think that you guys have some kind of spiritual connection.

[00:31:48] Jane: He goes, I don't know how to explain it. And if I told you the stories, you'd be like, whatever, and you're DJing right now. But I just needed to tell you that. And he was just like, right on man. But anyway, but Abba then told me, he's like, I said hi to Perry for you. And, so that, but that's it. Those are my only close encounters.

[00:32:01] Jane: But I do feel like if I ever meet Perry Farrell one day, like he might actually, there might be recognition there of some kind. Um, not of like, oh, you are the girl. There'll be like a soul recognition because it was a very weird thing going on there. Then I know it wasn't just me because at least one person was there with

[00:32:18] Jane: me, like For all three of those experiences, and they were like, Perry's talking to you, man. This is weird. Yeah.

[00:32:24] Heidi: Wild.

[00:32:25] Etienne: Yeah. That's really cool, Jane. Seriously? Oh my God.

[00:32:29] Jane: I love him so much and I hope that in his head, he knows that, he's had connections I'm sure with, like we all feel that way, right? At a really good concert, you feel like you're having a moment, maybe, and everybody's collectively having a moment and it's very parasocial, you know what I mean? But he just said things that were just so specific that, that I felt it was different.

[00:32:48] Heidi: Yeah. I would've felt the same way, for sure.

[00:32:51] Etienne: When you start talking about that dog collar in the bathroom thing, I thought you were gonna say he came up on stage, wearing it or something. I'm like, wait, he took it like

[00:32:58] Jane: That would've been amazing. That would've been amazing. But then you would've got it from the women's bathroom, which is a little like, eh.

[00:33:04] Etienne: That's true. And he can't say there's no line at the women's bathroom ever. That's why I had to use it, because that would be a lie.

[00:33:11] Jane: You know what though? At Jane's Addiction concerts, there's more guys than girls. So there was not actually a line at the bathroom

[00:33:19] Etienne: Oh, see, so he could have used the women's bathroom if he had to go.

[00:33:21] Jane: He could have. He could have. It's like when I went to see Tool, there's zero line. I'm like, are there No, what? I mean, I'm not complaining. I just thought it was weird. I'm like, not as many women as men love Tool. I don't know. It was weird.

[00:33:33] Etienne: Oh my God. I mean, Jane knows I had a close encounter with Steven Perkins that she mentioned in his, in her last, like, yeah. So, uh, there was a guy that I really liked who had no idea that I liked him, who I went to community college with back in the early, early nineties. And the first Jane's Addiction album was already out, but they were recording the second one, the Ritual de lo Habitual or whatever it was called. I think that was the name of it. And

[00:33:58] Jane: shocking

[00:33:58] Etienne: oh, was nothing, Nothing Shocking the second one or the fir, Nothing Shocking is the first

[00:34:01] Jane: was the second.

[00:34:02] Etienne: Oh, it was the second

[00:34:03] Jane: The first one is actually self-titled and then there was Nothing Shocking, and then

[00:34:07] Etienne: Okay. So then they were recording Ritual de lo Habitual. And, this guy that I liked, his name was Dave. He was like, Hey, you wanna go to the movies with me and my friend Steven? I'm like, yeah, sure. And we drove over to Steven Perkins house and actually got invited in. He lived with his parents. Still at that point, I don't know why he was living with his parents. I'm sure he had enough money at that point, but maybe he just preferred that. His room was not very big. It was probably about the size of the room that I've got here in this little rental cabin with Heidi. And he had a drum set in the corner and he likes to showing us some of the artwork from the album, like before we left to go to the movie and we went and saw Johnny Handsome. So, yeah. A Mickey Rourke movie from a long, long time ago. I think that might have been from 1990. But it was really cool 'cause I knew who he was. I was like, holy shit. Like I didn't realize we were like coming to pick up Steven Perkins, Jane's Addiction. That is crazy. But yeah, that was the only time I met him.

[00:35:06] Etienne: But I also did have a close encounter with Perry Farrell. He was backstage at a concert at the Palace, which was another big venue in LA that my boyfriend had done a show there that night, I think, and he was settling up and I don't know why Perry Farrell just shows up in that back room, the office where he was settling up and he was there with his girlfriend, this Asian woman that was gorgeous. It's just like, oh shit. All right. Perry Farrell and I didn't like exchange any words with him. I don't think. I don't think we got introduced. I was just like, I wasn't even there.

[00:35:36] Etienne: But it's fine. Like I, it was just super cool and yeah, she was fantastically gorgeous. But yeah, those are my, my Jane's Addiction close encounters. 

[00:35:46] Heidi: So I've had a few celebrity encounters that are pretty special. I talked about meeting Norman Lear at the screenwriting conference. But also the very first time we went to New York City, I was a Project Runway fanatic. And. The only thing I wanted to do the whole time, for sometime during the week that we were gonna be there, I just wanted to go to Parsons and possibly run into Tim Gunn, you know? So we get to the last night and it hasn't happened.

[00:36:17] Heidi: We've been to so many other sites that Parsons just never got fit in. And so I was a little bummed. We were walking back from dinner and walking back to our rental in Greenwich Village and walking towards us on the sidewalk is this dapper gentleman. And I'm like, no way.

[00:36:34] Heidi: It was freaking Tim Gunn all by himself walking on a New York City sidewalk. And I just couldn't believe it. And. Stopped him. I was like, Tim, Tim Gunn. And I just, yeah, we talked about the new season. 'Cause I think it was like season two or three of us coming up and he was so sweet. Like, talked to us for a good 10, 15 minutes there on the sidewalk. And then we let him go and we went on our night and my husband at the time was just like, how did that happen?

[00:37:07] Heidi: I'm like, I think I manifested it for sure. Yeah. Because he was the only person I wanted to see in New York City. And it happened. Yeah, it was crazy. And then when, um, when 

[00:37:18] Jane: so glad. He was nice. I'm glad he was nice.

[00:37:21] Heidi: He was so sweet. Very sweet. And yeah, just a genuine good person. You can tell. And then the second one that's pretty important is, being out in LA, taking meetings and stuff, when I won the screen craft fellowship. One of our meetings got canceled and the girl that I was a fellow with, she wanted to work on her pitch.

[00:37:43] Heidi: And so our handler guy was like, oh, well let's go to the Starbucks and work on the pitch before our next meeting is gonna happen. As soon as we walk in the door, I clock this older gentleman that's waiting for a drink and, even though he was in sunglasses, ball cap, ponytail, I knew immediately it was John Carpenter. Just immediately. These two have already walked off. And I'm like, okay, I need to find out. Is this really John Carpenter? And I'm in line behind him and I'm doing a Google image search real quickly.

[00:38:17] Heidi: Is this him? Oh my God. It is him. And so he gets his drinks and him and his wife are at the little station to mix up your drinks or whatever, and I'm thinking, okay, it's now or never. Like I gotta, I gotta say something. So I go up to him, I'm like, John, and he just, he's giving me this look like, okay Psycho.

[00:38:38] Heidi: And I'm like, John Carpenter. He is like, yeah. And I just immediately word vomit all over this man, you know, telling him, oh my God, I am in LA right now all because of you and your movies, and you've been such a huge inspiration. And, I wanna make films because of your movies had such a big impact on me.

[00:38:57] Heidi: And he softened. He was like, oh, and we had this very special moment between each other. And then, him and his wife just left. And I immediately started crying because I was like, that was the universe kind of saying, yep, doing good. And then our very next meeting was with Atomic Monster, and I had a whole story to tell them and the producer said, oh my gosh, I go to that Starbucks all the time, I've never seen John Carpenter there. I've been going there for years. They'd never seen John Carpenter there, so I'm like, it was meant to be. Yeah. So

[00:39:29] Jane: That's so great. I know how much you love him, and that's awesome.

[00:39:33] Heidi: Yeah. I mean, I haven't seen many celebrities in LA but that, yeah, that was pretty special. And again, yeah, didn't take any pictures or anything, didn't ask to take a picture with him. I just wanted to express how grateful I was for his work and what an inspiration he was. So I was just thankful that I was able to express that to him.

[00:39:53] Heidi: Same with Norman Lear. You know, I got to tell him, your shows basically raise me, help raise me. Being with a not so great parental figure, I learned my morals from Norman Lear shows and Mr. Rogers, and so yeah, it was pretty special to be able to thank them.

[00:40:13] Jane: You totally manifested those meetings because who goes to LA and just meets their hero. You go to New York, the only person you wanna see in New York you run into. You meet freaking Norman Lear who's another hero. Like, that's just, that's incredible.

[00:40:26] Heidi: Yeah. So yeah, I feel like my celebrity encounters have been, and then, okay, so my rando one back in the nineties when Friends was really popular, me and a girlfriend went to Park City for the Sundance Film Festival. Like it was a big deal and they always had parties. So we were thinking, oh, maybe we can crash a party.

[00:40:48] Heidi: No, it never happened. But we were walking along the slushy streets of Park City and here comes Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc, I think. Yeah. Yeah. So they were really trashed, I should say, with girls on either arm and just like, yeah, drunkenly passing us by. It was crazy 

[00:41:10] Etienne: that's cute. I mean, that's how I'd expect 'em. 'Cause if we're talking like, you know, the nineties, I mean, that's when their show was huge. So yeah, there's gonna be moments for those brand new celebrities where they're just gonna be drunken and ridiculous. And yeah, I mean, any of us would be probably, if we got super, super, super worldwide famous in our twenties, we're just gonna be ridiculous for a bit.

[00:41:33] Etienne: You just gotta, and especially men, holy crap. I mean, I can just imagine it being worse for them. They get more leeway to be ridiculous, but then come back from it, you know, eventually thinking of

[00:41:43] Jane: They do get more

[00:41:44] Etienne: yeah, I'm thinking about like Robert Downey Jr. You know, that's a big leeway. Mm-hmm. I mean, I'm glad. I just feel like everybody should get that opportunity, not just the men. I think women should get that as well.

[00:41:56] Jane: A hundred percent. Instead of them going like, look, is she sloppy drunk and she fell the limo. Someone check her into rehab. They just immediately jump to extremes with that. And you're right, there's not a lot of leeway, but I'm glad that, I feel like all of our celebrity experiences we're positive.

[00:42:11] Etienne: Yeah, and I think none of us had moments where we're like, we need a picture, you know? No, I mean, of course mine were usually happening around the time where you're not gonna even have a camera on you. You know? Like they're not on your phones. I didn't have a phone like.

[00:42:27] Jane: That is an excellent point. Like we did not, you know, if you wanted a camera on you, like that was literally, you're going outta your way to bring an extra thing with you and it was not small, you know what I mean? Unless you're with the press, why are you have a, who has a camera in their pocket?

[00:42:43] Etienne: With actual film, like, you know, like we grew up where there was actual film in the camera, then they became digital. Then we have cameras on our phones. But that was the progression and shit. I mean, I remember Polaroids, you know, I mean we're that that far back? I mean, they've come back in fashion at points in time.

[00:42:58] Etienne: But yeah, dude, I never walked around the camera. Mm-hmm. Only if I was traveling in other countries. That's it. That's the only time I had a camera on me. I swear.

[00:43:06] Jane: and then you could develop that picture later and like maybe you could show someone like this blurry thing right here. I'm telling you. That is Tim Roth. He was right there and he lit my cigarette and

[00:43:16] Etienne: That's okay. I have

[00:43:17] Jane: like, okay, whatever,

[00:43:18] Etienne: touched his skin. I had his last cigarette. I win.

[00:43:25] Jane: Nice. Oh, I love these stories for all of us. This is, this is

[00:43:31] Etienne: And I mean, seriously, when am I ever, I can't still to this day, can't believe that I had my face in Trent Reznor's neck and hair. Like I still can't believe that that happened. I mean, I would've never, if somebody told me when I first listen to Pretty Hate Machine way back when one day your neck is gonna, your face is gonna be in his neck and hair. And I would've be like, you're fucking high. There's no way that's happening.

[00:43:54] Jane: All right, so if anybody is listening and you know any of the people that we have talked about today, or you know, someone who knows, someone who knows any of the people we have talked about today, let them know that we love them and this was like a fun thing and maybe, I don't know, maybe one day we could just thank 'em for that little moment of brightness.

[00:44:12] Etienne: Still love Tim Roth. I still love Trent Reznor. I mean, yeah, I've all these people. I love Adam Duritz, like literally, or Perry Farrell, obviously. Yeah, love him. Steven Perkins. All of them are still so cool. I feel like all of these like gen, I mean, I know don't think Tim Roth is technically Gen X, but I feel like all these like Gen X stars are just awesome. Or like they were stars during our generation, that's when they got really famous. They're awesome people and I feel like they're real, you know, not, I feel like they're a hundred percent real people and they had to work really hard to get where they were. 'Cause it was a lot different back then. You know, you had to win friends and influence people. It wasn't just getting viral with your phone. So,

[00:44:52] Heidi: Yeah. They were putting in their dues and the time and yeah. Touring and grinding it out in front of small, small audiences over and over and over until they hit it. Yeah.

[00:45:04] Etienne: Oh, Jane, I don't know if I've ever told you this 'cause I think you would love this really quick and not as,

[00:45:08] Jane: all those random celebrities that we

[00:45:10] Etienne: don't, I don't have a story of a close encounter with them, but, Rage Against The Machine. Did I ever tell you I saw them in the tiniest little club before they were famous.

[00:45:18] Jane: You did and I'm super jealous 'cause I never got to see them live.

[00:45:22] Etienne: that was the best. And we were upstairs and they were downstairs, 'cause we were overlooking the stage and there was so much jumping going on that where we were at was rattling, like the whole building was rattling from how hard these people were jumping. So this was like a whole other era and I kind of wish for a minute I could go back in time, like relive just a week. Like I could pick the best week ever and just go there.

[00:45:46] Jane: true. Right? I don't wanna live through my twenties all over again. I did actually, I had one more encounter with Moby when he was still just DJing. He used to throw parties and he had this loft in Brooklyn. So I was in Moby's loft, but so was like, I don't know, like 200 other people. It wasn't like he invited me personally. I was just there 'cause I had friends who were DJs and we were all there and he wasn't playing at the time and he was like talking to somebody about, he had a picture on the wall that I think it was like Homer Simpson or something. It was like the only thing I feel like I saw on the wall and I asked him where the bathroom was.

[00:46:14] Jane: That was my, that. That's my interaction. But he was just like Moby, then. He was a big time DJ in New York City, but it wasn't like, Moby, you know, it was Moby.

[00:46:23] Etienne: That's super cool. You got to like, yeah. Yeah. You were in his loft where he lived.

[00:46:29] Jane: I used Moby's

[00:46:31] Etienne: You used his bathroom. Jane peed in Moby's toilet or more? I don't know what she was doing in there.

[00:46:40] Jane: Oh my God. I only peed

[00:46:41] Etienne: peed.

[00:46:42] Jane: it Moby. If you're listening, I only peed

[00:46:45] Etienne: And Jane's pee

[00:46:46] Jane: in the toilet.

[00:46:47] Etienne: bacteria free. So a hundred percent sterile. Jane puts sterile pee in his toilet.

[00:46:52] Jane: Yes. Oh my God. Such a strange way to put it. Yes, but I enjoyed his music very much

[00:47:00] Etienne: Oh yeah. That night or just in general? Like his music is,

[00:47:03] Jane: in general. In general. Before he was singing on tracks and he was just like putting together these hard techno tracks. And he actually played the night that I saw that the Porno For Pyros thing happened at the Enid Festival. I didn't hang out with him that night. At that point, he was like big, big, you know what I mean? Where he had that song Porcelain had come out. And so like, he would play songs that he created live. And some of them were still the hard hitting techno and kind of like this housey kind of thing. Songs like Go. And then there was a song that he actually called, like the fastest song ever made. And then he had some other more melodic things that he did. But, they were all very cool. Ah, the nineties

[00:47:39] Etienne: Such a good time.

[00:47:41] Jane: Good time for music. Not the kind that was on the radio per se, but the kind that we all Liked. You know, there was a lot of shitty music in the nineties too, like, Color Me Bad. Like nobody wants, nobody needs that. Nobody needed them. And it, and if you're listening, I don't, I don't care if you know that.
